Note, I am not a lost causer and am as much of a pro union person as you can get. But as someone who’s left wing, I don’t think Gettysburg was lost cause really at all. Gods and generals was very much lost cause propaganda (and a terribly boring movie) but Gettysburg I feel was just an objective telling of the war from how both sides saw it. The south saw themselves fighting against tyranny, at least many common soldiers did. (This is not to say that they were. The CSA government and ruling class DID fight to preserve expand and save the institution of slavery) but the union characters made it very clear they were fighting for freedom. Chamberlain gave a while speech about it in the first 30 minutes of the movie. I can get why people might say it’s lost cause, but honestly I don’t think it is.

i was struck by familiarity to the tune, and i finally placed it. the tune of this one is strikingly similar to renditions i've heard of "ye jacobites by name". given how often tunes are reused and iterated on for folk songs, i can't help but wonder if theres a link, either direct or through other songs?
